6 killed and 81 injured in explosion in Istanbul's Beyoglu district

At least six people were killed and 81 others were injured, two of them seriously, in an explosion on the popular pedestrian Istiklal Street in Istanbul on Sunday evening.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerli Kaya informed in a post on social media that today, at around 16.20, an explosion occurred in Taksim Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district. Police, health, fire and (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) AFAD teams were dispatched to the scene.

Vice President Fuat Oktay confirmed the death toll and the wounded in a statement on Sunday night, as well as the woman who detonated the bomb. "Based on the governor's preliminary information, the explosion may have been an act of suspicion of terrorism."

"The relevant units of our state are searching for the offender of this damnable attack," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told a news conference.

Images of the scene shared on social media showed flames as well as the sound of an explosion heard from afar.

The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown
