Iraq: Civil Defense said on Friday that 15 people were killed when a gas cylinder exploded in a residential area of Sulaymaniyah city. An earlier figure released by health officials on Friday had reported 10 deaths.

Yesterday Hawal Abubakar, the governor of Sulaimaniya, announced three days of mourning.

Civil Defense said that after the explosion of a gas cylinder, fire brigade personnel carried out a rescue operation for 17 hours in the residential area and brought the fire under control. Police said several houses were damaged in the fire and at least five vehicles were destroyed.

Police officials said that three houses were completely destroyed due to the explosion of LPG cylinder kept on the roof of a house.

The explosion was so strong that the window glasses of many houses were broken and the front of the neighboring building turned black.

Last month in October, nine people were killed and 13 others were injured when a tanker carrying gas accidentally exploded in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

In April 2021, a Baghdad hospital fire killed more than 80 people when a misplaced oxygen cylinder exploded.
