Palestine Liberation Organization welcomes Australia to reverse decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital

Ramallah, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 (WAFA) -- The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) today welcomed Australia's decision not to move its embassy in Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Hussein al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the PLO's Executive Committee, tweeted: "We welcome Australia's decision and thank it for its call for a two-state solution in accordance with international validity.

Today Australia announced a decision, Australia overturning the previous Conservative government's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Foreign Minister Benny Wong confirmed the decision, saying that "Jerusalem is a matter between Israel and the Palestinians that should be resolved only through peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian people."

Foreign Minister Benny Wong said that Australia would not support an approach that would undermine it. she also said that the Australian Embassy has always been in Tel Aviv and will continue to in Tel Aviv.

In 2018 Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
